SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 35
(By Senators Helmick, Ross, Mitchell, Fanning, Edgell, Kessler,

McKenzie, Facemyer, Redd, Boley, Burnette, Minear, Sprouse,

Recognizing the many contributions of the March of Dimes Birth
Defects Foundation to the State of West Virginia.

Whereas, The March of Dimes was founded in 1938 by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt for the development of a vaccine which
virtually eliminated polio; and

Whereas, Since the defeat of polio, the March of Dimes has
continued to be a pioneer in saving infants from birth defects, low
birth weight and infant mortality through research, community
programs, education and advocacy; and

Whereas, The March of Dimes brings together the power of
volunteers and the benefits of science against birth defects, the
nation's number one health problem of children; and

Whereas, By the expansion of West Virginia's current Birth
Defects Surveillance System, we will be able to identify the
incidence and trends of birth defects; expand the informational
database; expand access and linkages to support programs and
services for identified babies and children; and increase prevention activities related to birth defects, prematurity, low
birth weight and infant mortality; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby recognizes the March of Dimes Birth
Defects Foundation for its many contributions to the State of West
Virginia; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the appropriate representatives of the
West Virginia Chapter of the March of Dimes Birth Defects
Foundation.
